About eCity

A new initiative called Securing Our eCity is creating a public and private coalition of concerned stakeholders including consumer advocates, business owners, governmental agencies (law enforcement and legislative bodies) to better educate and protect the public against cybercrime. Through educational programs, the deployment of modern security technologies and solutions, and coordination of the legislative and law enforcement agencies, the Securing Our eCity initiative will counter the rapidly growing wave of cybercriminal activity.

Several organizations including businesses, civic and foundation groups have either committed or shown strong interest in supporting this initiative. Current San Diego business sponsors include ESET, Websense, Anakam, Breach Security and Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch. Civic groups such as the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and UCSD Extension have been early in showing support. The San Diego Police Department and the San Diego Police Foundation has also been brought into the discussion.

Goals and Objectives:

There are several goals and objectives of the Securing Our eCity initiative:

  1. Build awareness about the growing variety of cybercrime threat
  2. Provide resources and education to the San Diego community about cybercrime and how to avoid being victimized
  3. Coordinate public and private efforts between citizens, business, civic and government organizations to prevent and prosecute cybercrime
  4. Provide a "clearing house" of information about cybercrime and related resources
  5. Develop resources and funding for cybercrime prevention. Example: raise funds for a state of the art "cybercrime lab" for the San Diego Police Department
  6. Introduce home and business computer users to technologies and tools that help reduce and or prevent cybercrime
  7. Develop a voice of advocacy which encourages legislative engagement at the local, state and national levels
  8. San Diego will be a model other communities, businesses and governments can emulate
  9. Create and promote "best practices" for a "cybersafe" home or business

Supporting Programs:

To support these goals, the Securing Our eCity initiative may develop programs such as:

  1. The development of a leadership Team to create awareness and help develop and execute programs
  2. Development of educational seminars about cybercrime and ways to prevent it. These events can be delivered in schools, businesses and civic organizations and associations such as Rotary, SDRCC, AeA, UCSD Extension, etc...
  3. Online self-paced training resources for consumers
  4. An annual Security Forum to bring together key private and public stakeholders to learn about cybercrime and the most current countermeasures. This forum will include experts from the security industry, law enforcement and the business community
  5. Support and funding for a state of the art "Cybercrime Lab" for the San Diego Police Department
